A true story...

As a small business owner running a website design business I always try to look after my clients.

But one day I received a request that was a little out of the ordinary. A client of mine (I'll call him Doug) had been searching for a beautiful, hot Russian bride online and sent me an invitation to join a Ukranian Dating Agency.

This was one of those online matchmaking agencies for singles where you register, post your details and then get to exchange messages with beautiful, hot Russian brides and young Ukranian women seeking love, marriage and relationships, or visit chat rooms to find your Russian bride. If I joined this club I would earn bonus points for Doug which would allow him to do more things with his membership. Basic membership was free.

Now, this was all very intriguing, but when I pointed out to Doug that my wife probably wouldn't approve of me chatting to single girls, starting an online relationship and finding a beautiful, hot Russian bride. Doug became very embarrassed at this point and was very apologetic.

Doug's a lovely fellow and I felt for him. So I said "Hey, don't sweat it. It's free, so just for fun I'll join and get you your bonus points. What the heck." Anyway, not knowing anything about so-called mail order Russian brides I was curious. I remember seeing a TV program some time ago where this guy travelled to Russia, dated several women and finished up making one his bride.

Apparently it is extremely difficult for Ukranian ladies to find suitable partners. And Russian women were different to their Western counterparts. Although they are intelligent (often speaking two or more languages) and well educated they favour traditional "roles" in marriage and relationships. They have feminine attitudes to themselves and like to be treated as a pretty lady. But of course many of them struggle to establish a good life in a troubled country.

Anyway, to continue the story...

Occasionally I would get messages from members of this international dating agency who saw my profile on the website. This surprised me because my total description of myself was "Just a bloke". I didn't think anyone would find me interesting enough to write to, but there you go!

I didn't respond to these messages until I received one where I could view a photo online. Of course, I had to take a look. Expecting to see a photo of someone who you usually described as having a "great personality" instead I found a beautiful, hot 25 year old who wouldn't look out of place in a modelling catalogue. Or so I reckoned. What do you think...

I was astounded that someone who looked like that could find it difficult to find a partner. So I replied to her to tell her just that, and to tell her that I was married and why I was a member of that club. I didn't expect to hear from her again, but to my surprise Natalia wrote back and told me more about life in Russia, the things she likes and the difficulties she faces in day to day life.

I wanted to know more about the "Russian mail order bride" experience from her perspective and she wanted to learn more about life in Australia.

As I got to know Natalia better I decided that I would try to help her and other Russian women find their dream partner because someone like Natalia does not deserve to be lonely (if I was 20 years younger and single I would been on the first plane!).

Note: since Natalia started working on this project with me things have become pretty tough for her. Her grandmother who she lived with died, which had a devastating impact both emotionally and financially. She can now only communicate with me when she can afford to visit an Internet cafe.

Life in Russia is not easy, and a lot of things we take for granted in affluent Western countries are luxuries only dreamt of in Russia.

Actually I really hate that term "Russian Mail Order Bride". These are people, not commodities, with dreams and aspirations who want to make a good life for them and their partners.
